Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity is a book by filmmaker and spreader-of-Transcendental-Meditation David Lynch. It’s a quick read, with each idea in a 1 to 3 page ‘chapter’. It’s a lovely introduction to meditation and a nice insight on one style of creativity.
Lessons for Yogis (and artists):
1) “Translating the Idea” – Meditation can be a powerful tool in helping you move from an image in your mind to an actual creation (be it a film, painting, piece of music, new arrangement in your house, or pinterest craft!) Lynch describes how it helps place your brain in a state of Flow.
2) The full practice of yoga can be a meditation tool. Lynch talks about seeing photos of Yogis in forests in India, with serene faces he described as full of power and dignity and void of fear.
3) My favorite line – “Meditation is not a selfish thing. Even though you’re diving in and experiencing the Self, you’re not closing off from the world. You’re strengthening yourself, so that you can be more effective when you go back out into the world.”

I think I got this book right before I moved to LA. There’s a line in here that I loooove about the light in Los Angeles. That there’s something about the light there, something that drew the first filmmakers there. I’ve felt that entrepreneurial energy there. And naturally it was great to read little bits and pieces about Twin Peaks.
I’ve still got a copy that I’d be happy to anyone in class! I’d also recommend the audiobook… my brother-in-law had the audiobook READ by David Lynch, which is naturally delightful. ~Jordan
