Meditation is about directing the mind’s attention, and directing it towards your thoughts can be a great way to uncover some of you patterns of thinking. It’s a challenging thing to do. Receptive meditations involve focusing on something and just receiving it, as opposed to a guided meditation where you may be generating a specific pattern of thoughts.
There are many great sources about meditation, with descriptions certainly more elegant than mine. I’m not pulling from anything in particular as best I know, but these are my favorite books in their approach to the subject of meditation:
Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Yoga: The Spirit and practice of moving into stillness by Erich Schiffman
Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield
