Niyama: Svadhyaya

Svadhyaya

This niyama is about staying really looking at ourselves.  We need to challenge our existing perceptions through the wisdom of others – often in reading – but we need to balance that with meditation and other practices of observing.  We have the freeing opportunity to disconnect from our ego identity and be as objective as we can – when we don’t take our own actions personally or get defensive, we can be curious and amused.

HeartOfYogatheyogasutrasThe niyamas are the second limb of yoga, found in a text called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.  The translation that I used was from T.K.V. Desikachar in his book The Heart of Yoga.  Tons of great sources are available online  on the second limb of yoga
